METAMODERNISM − The reaction to Postmodernism has been building for some time, manifesting itself in various forms. British artists Billy Childish & Charles Thompson (Remodernism, Stuckists) penned a brief manifesto in this regard articulating the return of spirituality, depth, and (dare I say it?) God in art. German scholar Raoul Eshelman wrote about Performatism, which I would compare to (using an HTML concept to clarify) presenting an inline frame of metaphysical themes within the confines of a work of art. And in "Notes on Metamodernism", Dutch theorists Timotheus Vermeulen and Robin van den Akker proposed the catch-all term of Metamodernism to describe the tendencies of the movement to oscillate between characteristics of both Modernism and Postmodernism *. Differing terminology aside, a passing observation of our identity-crisis-marked society reveals that the depthlessness & lack of reference points perpetuated by Postmodern art is becoming passé, as people today increasingly seek meaning, purpose, & deeper connections.
