CULINARY ARTS

Yes, chefs and cooks can be considered artists as well. The palette they paint with consists of the colors, textures, & even the sounds of their ingredients, and their presentation is only complete after ensuring the flavors of their creation bring joy & gratification to their audience. Apart from this, cooking represents a slice of culture, and families can even grow closer when cooking together. (…especially when there's a rush to save that almost burnt pot roast in the oven!)
To be clear, I don't consider myself a professional cook, nor do I intend to become one. My mom taught me how to cook years ago (even though incredibly she was self-taught herself!), but I've found myself falling into a repetitive rut lately, preparing the same old recipes again and again. So I've decided to post a few different dishes here in order to force myself to try new culinary concepts. And you'll notice I also prepare dishes from other cultures apart from my own. Some might deride that as some kind of cultural "appropriation", but I prefer to look at it as respectful "appreciation" of other cultures. Artists, musicians, & filmakers have long allowed international influences to inspire their own work (culinary or otherwise).
I won't be posting recipes here, because I didn't devise most of these on my own. When I do use a recipe, I'll often imperfectly improvise it, either just to use what I have at hand or to incorporate healthier ingredients. Sometimes it works, and sometimes it's a fantastical flop!

AUGUST 2024 UPDATE  As you can see, I've divided up this section into two pages, and the transition isn't quite complete yet… With each new set of uploads, hopefully my food photography & setups are improving as well. Now my culinary creations can look way better than they actually taste!

  • FISH WITH MANGO SAUCE

I realize the quantity of sauce grossly outweighs the amount of fish here, but trust me, there was originally more protein. Perhaps I should speak with my food stylist…

  • CAMARONES ENCHILADOS  🇨🇺

My minimalistic variation on a Cuban culinary theme. There really is quite a rich treasure of flavors in Latin American dishes, many of which I've yet to explore!

  • BOBOTIE  🇿🇦

A slice of a South African favorite. I was missing an ingredient, but at least it looks the part, right? (Note: garnish leaf is not for eating!)

  • PSARI PLAKI  🇬🇷

A tasty fish dish in traditional Greek style. (Yes I assure you, there is plenty of fish buried somewhere in that delicious sauce.)

  • TORTILLA CUPS

I saw of photo of these somewhere and decided to riff on the theme. Sure it came out different since I didn't use a recipe, but here's to the originals.

  • HOMEMADE FRUIT JAM

I've never made homemade jam before but after seeing how easy this recipe was to prepare, I'll definitely try it again. That's my jam. Literally.

THE REMIXES

THE REMIXES: In the spirit of continuous improvement, I've posted a few select dishes where I've revisited previously attempted recipes. Because getting it perfect on the first try doesn't always happen in real world situations. Are these remixes more successful than the originals? I'll let you decide!

  • CHOCOLATE CAKE

For this remix recipe I baked a three layer chocolate cake with a homemade frosting of a less gooey consistency.

  • SWEDISH MEATBALLS

Can you really call them Swedish Meatballs unless you have a more authentic sauce? Et voila!

  • LASAGNA

This time I used a tomato sauce & bechamel sauce combination. Maybe I'm a lasagna purist, but I think I prefer the classic recipe,
