BIOGRAPHY

Growing up, I always had books and educational resources at my disposal, courtesy of my insightful parents. And since I come from a creative family and a lineage of talented artists, I always had art supplies available as well. So of course I dabbled in drawing & creative endeavors almost from the time I could hold a pencil. My parents also encouraged interest in music, proceeding to buy me a fine Latin classical guitar (…which, unfortunately, I accidentally broke during a game of indoor dodgeball!) Learning my native Spanish was a must, and I was also required to participate in some sports at the community level. So yes, despite my best efforts, my parents strove to shape me into a well-rounded individual. (And trust me, I was pretty rotund back then, too!)
You may be surprised to hear this, but I never used to consider myself an artist. Back in high school, I worked alongside art students with such amazing abilities & artistic intuition, and I suppose I felt a bit inadequate since by that time drawing had simply become a side hobby. Besides, I was already leaning towards the graphic design track, and my narrow-minded assumption was I wouldn't really need fine art or its corresponding principles. But the university curriculum corrected those misconceptions fairly quickly!
When it did come to selecting a college, I didn't attend any Ivy League schools. Instead, I earned my Bachelor's Degree at a local university, which some would affectionately call a "commuter school". While the Art Department professors there were top notch and the Creative & Writing instructors helped fine-tune my skills, a large part of what I've learned came from outside of the university environment. From grade school teachers who encouraged reading, sports, and impeccable spelling to junior high & high school teachers who instilled in me the core basics of math, science & writing, I was blessed with a good, solid academic foundation. Together with my parents, all these teachers & professors sparked inside of me a predisposition towards a love of learning. And you can find a few of the fruits of my self-initiated endeavors throughout the pages of this site, some of which include web design, figure drawing, model & landscape photography, political commentary, culinary expressions, and an initial ability to read music. If you haven't noticed by now, I'm just a little bit of a nerd, and it's true, I haven't quite decided what I want to be when I grow up.
Not that I believe I've "arrived" as an artist or even as an individual. Far from it! A graphic design journal once pointed out that the Cubist art movement embrace the concept of "becoming", suggestive of an ever-evolving state. One could almost say it implied opposition to the act of remaining static or stagnant. In keeping with the spirit of that idea, may you and I always be ever-improving towards the best representation of ourselves.
