Omar Marcos - Sculpture - Unfurling

UNFURLING - Phase II

As artists, delving into fields or genres that aren't necessarily our primary focus can often serve as a point of exploration and even provide a much needed fresh perspective to our main catalog of work. Sometimes experimental work springboards to another area of specialty, and other times it's intended to remain as a personal project, which is why I've listed this piece as NFS.
As you can see above, I finally had some time to apply a base coat of color to this sculpture, and while it's obviously not in finished form yet, the direction of the piece is solidifying, becoming in part a study in textures and surfaces.

STATUS: NFS (Not For Sale)

UNFURLING - Phase I

It's interesting what you find when you're cataloging your work. This was one of my first created sculptures when I used to have access to a metalworking shop. To be honest, I was never really good at this type of work, and when I had to take a jewelry-making class in school, I was likely the least creative and the most awkward sculptor in the room!
Yet even though this sculpture is missing a piece & some of the cuts are sloppy & the welding is messy (yet strong), I'm posting it because sometimes imperfections make the work of art. (If you've ever collected coins, you know that often the ones that are improperly minted are the most valuable…)
And I've listed this piece as being in Phase I because some areas have a few spots of superficial rust. So at some point I'll post forthcoming images in the restorative process.
